Henning Takes Opening Round of A.M.S.A. Season at Twin Cities

The first race of the 2009 season showcased what promises to be one of the most competitive seasons of racing in years.  Although temperatures were cool, action on the track was definitely hot.  Twenty-one competitors rolled into North Vernon, Indiana's Twin Cities Raceway Park on Saturday evening.

A.M.S.A. front man, Jerry Tague, commented "The turn-out was a little lighter than I had hoped, but I do know that there were several competitors that were not yet ready and several more that were wrapped up in spring break activities with their family.  While the field might have been short a few cars, there was definitely a lot of depth there from last year's champion Dusty Hueston through 2008 winners including Henning, Stewart and Barnhart.

Everyone was ready to shake the dust off after a long winter without racing.  In heat race action Rod Henning, Ryan Broughton and Austin Archdale were victorious.  In the feature point man Henning jumped out into the lead, but was not without challenge as Lynn Ambrose was in pursuit.  After a few laps of strong challenge by Amrose, Henning opened it up a bit.  As the checkers dropped, it was Henning in the Ronnie French owned FOZ Race Car.   Henning was followed to the line a threesome of entries out of the ERC racing stable including brothers Colin and Lynn Amrose and sprint car racer Kerry Kinser.  Rounding out the top five was Beau Stewart.  2008 champion Dustin Hueston would retire from racing early with engine problems.

The next racing action on the A.M.S.A. schedule is a pair of races on Friday and Saturday evenings, April 17th and 18th.  On Friday April 17th, the A.M.S.A. mini sprints will take to the track at Moeller Raceway Park for the first time ever.  On Saturday evening the cars roll into famed Lawrenceburg Speedway and will share the racing card with the USAC sprints.
