Lawrenceburg Goes to Henning

Pre-season predictions that this could be one of the most competitive ever for mini sprint racing in the midwest certainly appear to be well founded.  Although Rod Henning scored his second victory of the very young season--it was far from easy.

The American Mini Sprint Racing Association (A.M.S.A.) was fortunate to be the support class for the USAC sprints opening race of 2009 at the Famed Lawrenceburg Speedway.  Although several were concerned how the new clay would hold up with all the rain of the previous week, competitors were treated to a smooth racing surface that made for exciting racing action.

A strong field of twenty seven mini sprints were in attendance Saturday evening.  While the list of competitors featured drivers from Ohio, Indiana and Illinois--on this evening the field would truly be an international one.  Australian Mitch Biner recently made a trip to the states to purchase a mini sprint.  Biner decided that before crating is car for its return trip home he would like to race with the American Mini Sprint Association at the famed Lawrenceburg Speedway.  Biner said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was anxious to get his car home for competition across the pond.

Three heats of nine cars each rolled off to determine the twenty starting positions for the evening's feature.  The first heat of the evening would go to Rod Henning.  The second heat went to Austin Archdale.  The Third heat went to Beau Stewart.  The B Main went to Kevin Roberts Sr.

A number 5 was drawn for the invert setting the stage for an exciting feature event.  Front row starter Sam Ashworth jumped into the early lead and looked very strong in his second race in a 1000cc mini sprint.  Second row starter Beau Stewart quickly moved into position to pressure Ashworth for the lead.  Stewart pulled next to Ashworth but was unable to make the lead stick until Ashworth bobbled in the middle of the corner.

Stewart would lead the next three circuits until being passed by Rod Henning on the eleventh lap.  Stewart would continue in second until backing down as his Yamaha began experiencing overheating problems.  As the battle raged up front high school student, Ryan Broughton, was steadily climbing through the field making it all the way to second place--in a very nice run.

A little past the half way point the cars of Justin Roberts and Greg Nicholas made contact towards the end of the front stretch sending Nicholas into a series of violent end-over-end flips.  A very sore Nicholas emerged from a battered racer to the cheers of the crowd.

As the race came to a close it was Rod Henning, Ryan Broughton, Beau Stewart, Sam Ashworth and Drew Pollock claiming the top five spots.  A very happy Rod Henning emerged from his car in victory lane thanking car owner Ronnie French.  Henning explained that he used the early part of the race to figure out which lines were working best for his car and was able to capitalize in the latter stages of the race.

In compliance with the American Mini Sprint Associations stricter rule book, the top three in each heat race were weighed, three random cars received a complete inspection and the top three in the feature were weighed and had their fuel checked.  Race winner Rod Henning received a complete technical inspection.  All competitors passed inspection for the evening.

The American Mini Sprints will return to Lawrenceburg on May 2nd.
