What is A MINI SPRINT |Back to 2009 Guide to Mini Sprint Racing|
Many people are actually quite surprised when they get an up close and personal with a mini sprint. Although the name ‘mini’ might lead some to believe the car is a toy—nothing could be further from the truth. Today’s mini sprint is nearly identical in size to a midget. It shares nearly all of the same suspension and components as a midget, with the exception of the motor, driveline and rear end. In fact a few of the mini sprints in competition today actually started life as a midget.
Today’s mini sprint is powered by an efficient, reliable motorcycle engine capable of turning out between 120 to over 200 hp, depending on its displacement and configuration. The beauty of the mini sprint is that the motors used are readily available from ebay or motorcycle salvage yards for under $2500—with some available for as little as $1000. The car’s chain drive also allows competitors to avoid the expense of a costly rear-end. This also produces a racing car that is significantly lighter. In Ohio and Indiana the mini sprint events are available for cars ranging from 600cc to 1200cc in displacement. However, the 1000cc engine has become the most prevalent. Mini sprints also offer an exceptional value for an open wheel racing car. For example, a new mini sprint roller will cost in the neighborhood of $12,000-$15,000 depending on manufacturer and how it is equipped. There is also a strong used market for mini sprints with cars readily available for anywhere between $5,000 - $12,000 complete and ready to roll onto the track. The mini sprint's similarity to a midget or sprint car have made them an excellent training ground for tomorrow's midget and sprint car drivers. Drivers like Shane Cottle actually go their start in mini sprints. Additionally they feature a schedule that runs at many of the same tracks. In fact the mini sprint has become a popular support class for USAC and the WOO.
